In this blog post I am going to be discussing natural deodorant; what it is and what brand I found to work for me, while also discussing my likes and dislikes of the natural deodorant brand, Hey Humans.
Natural Deodorant
Natural deodorant has been all the rage recently and with good reason.
Natural deodorant has been said to be healthier for its all natural ingredients, which are being absorbed by the body and natural deodorant and deodorant in general is being used on a very important and very sensitive part of the body; the armpit.
According to blume.com (which is a blog and not a healthcare website), it mentions a few reasons why one could benefit from making the switch from antiperspirants and chemical deodorants to a natural deodorant.
I will link blume.com’s article here https://www.blume.com/blogs/blume-university/why-natural-deodorant-is-good-for-your-health
Lymphatic System & Armpits
My own curiosity was peaked when I was learning about lymphatic drainage and learned that our armpit area is very much apart of our bodies lymphatic system.
According to livescience.com, “The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that primarily consist of lymph vessels, lymph nodes and lymph. Its primary function is to transport lymph, a clear, colorless fluid containing white blood cells that helps rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials.”

As you read about the lymphatic system you’ll read how its job is to get rid of the bodies toxins, and sweat is one way our bodies get rid of toxins.
Reading about antiperspirants, you’ll find that it protects against odor and sweat, while deodorant protects against odor only, as dove.com explains in better detail than I could.
Switching To Natural Deodorant
After realizing how closely my armpits were linked with my lymphatic system, I tried the crystal natural deodorant and Tom Of Maine’s natural deodorant, but quickly learned that if I wanted to smell fresh, I would have to keep using my usual Dove and Secret…….that was until I found a natural deodorant product that actually worked and kept me smelling fresh all day long.
Finding A Natural Deodorant Brand
Hey Humans was the only natural deodorant on the market that really hit a few points for me on sight that made me eager to try it.
One, the packaging was and is clean and unique and it’s made from recyclable paper that is 99% plastic free, which is fantastic.
It’s also branded as gender neutral, which is another bonus.
Another key point was that Hey Humans products are all $6 and under and the natural deodorant specifically is only $4.99.
This told me that as a consumer that the product was branded as a price point alternative, when comparing price points to a chemically induced non-natural deodorants.
What I mean to say is that it didn’t view its competition as “other natural deodorant brands” it was competing next to old school brands instead.
Hey Humans was proving through example that if people were given the option to decide between a natural deodorant or a chemical deodorant, they may opt for natural as it fits within their pocket book and their personal values, which should not have to be mismatched but should be and can be aligned in the marketplace.
If you are used to seeing a certain price point for a product in the local supermarket, but see a healthier alternative for a bit extra, you’re always going to reason the purchase in some way, regardless, and that was exactly what Hey Humans picked up on.
Hey Humans also uses a price point that allows people to experiment with the idea of switching to a natural deodorant without feeling like they are being asked to fully commit, because switching from chemical deodorants and antiperspirants to natural deodorants is a freaking journey, man (don’t be fooled)…..
If you can offer the experimental switch out from a brand like Secret or Dove, which is anywhere from $3-7, is it really that big of a deal if a $5 natural deodorant doesn’t work out for you?
No.
Hey Humans is probably the most inclusive natural brand for personal hygiene products that the market has seen in a while.
I think it’s really important that brands who make everyday products are pricing them for everyday consumers, when everyday consumers will range in age from pre-teens to full-fledged adults.
The reality of parents paying $14+ for a natural deodorant for their child in America, in any household in America, regardless of income is not likely if the only option is above other cheaper options.
Cheaper options need to exist for that reason alone, and for the pure fact that children do have their own set of values and are learning to navigate that with their purchasing power.
When that purchasing power is still in the hands of their parents, it’s important that youth don’t feel like they are asking too much to have products available to them that don’t also stretch their parents financially.
So it’s really important when products and affordability can find a happy medium.
That has to be said.
Armpit Detox
When beginning to use a natural deodorant they say that you should detox, which I did not do because apparently I like to live on the edge.
But if you want to detox mask before going au natural…….humblebrands.com has the perfect DIY recipe and I will link the blog here……

After you do or do not do an armpit mask, it’s really important that you pick a scent that you like and can tolerate, while also understanding that the smell will mold itself to you in a new way, due to your pheromones.
As someone who loves Ginger and Rosewater as stand-alone scents, it was not really a surprise that was the scent I gravitated towards and ended up really loving.
Ginger and Rosewater as a scent turned into a really clean, almost powder fresh scent on me, which I adore….so I really love it and I think it works well.
My Experience
Some hiccups that I experienced on my three month journey with Hey Humans natural deodorant was that during the first two weeks; it was pretty dicey and to make sure I was not a gross pile of body odor, I put the deodorant on first thing in the morning and directly after my nightly shower.
During the third week and going into month two, I was only needing to put the deodorant on once a day, but by month two had to go back to applying the natural deodorant two times a day, as I think my armpits were going through an additional purge.
As I am now completed on month three of using natural deodorant, I have gone back down to using the deodorant once a day…….
Other things worth mentioning; because the formula has baking soda in it; your skin may be more sensitive if you use it twice a day like I did during the purge period.
I did experience some irritation and a bit of an enlarged razor bump due to shaving and the baking soda element, but it did go away and now I have no issue.
Also, my armpit area now shaves so much smoother and closer to my skin…….. and the skin has actually lightened up since using the product (brown skin tends to pigment in the armpit area upon shaving).
Other things I noticed when using natural deodorant was that my circulation feels better, I have more energy and I think that’s a win.
Overall, I think the product is amazing for the price point and the packaging was doing something right, because Native has now followed the paper packaging route as they navigate their products away from plastic.
