Alone for the holidays?

I made a similar blog post back in 2020, and it’s time for an updated version.

We are post-pandemic and I think the good thing about that is that there is more awareness about spending the holidays alone.

Can I be honest with you?

I love spending the holidays alone.

Truly. Bliss.

However, that is not my reality every year, but I do try to spend at least one holiday alone a year.

Even if you’re not happy to spend the holidays alone, you can try to make the most of your situation.

The key is to acknowledge your feelings, sit with your feelings, validate your feelings, and navigate those feelings.

Step 1: Acknowledge What You Love About the Holiday You’re Spending Alone

It could be that your family makes a certain dish that always makes the holiday feel special.

Try making it for yourself.

You can make the normal serving and freeze the rest, or you can try to make a single serving of your favorite dish.

Step 2: Make Plans

Waking up on a holiday with a game plan is key.

It’s important to make plans with yourself.

Making plans with yourself is such a game-changer.

As someone who used to be a chronic people pleaser and a bit co-dependent, nothing freaked me out more than doing things by myself.

Now I love it.

No one will flake out on you except you in this situation.

You’re not depending on anyone to show up or even be in a good mood.

These plans involve you and only you.

Do something you love.

Take yourself to the movies, to a nice wine bar, out to dinner, or go shopping.

Plan your perfect date and take yourself.

Go grocery shopping and plan a day of cooking.

Listen to your favorite song on repeat. Who’s going to stop you? Exactly!

Sleep in.

Enter Your Do Not Disturb Season

Put your phone on Do Not Disturb.

This means you delete all social apps until after the holiday.

Who wants to be reminded of the holiday festivities you’re actively not participating in?

Exactly.

Keep Pinterest up.

Re-pin to your heart’s content. Pinterest is the only form of healthy social media. I am convinced.

Plan for Your Future

While everyone is spending time with people they may or may not like — you get to spend time in your own space, with your own energy and your own thoughts.

This can sound scary to some.

To you? Heaven.

This is the perfect time to organize your life, create dreams, make plans, and get ahead on projects if that is what you like to do for fun.

Host Your Own Dinner

Host a dinner yourself.

You can invite friends over if they also don’t have holiday plans.

Have everyone bring one dish and BYOB.

Play games and chill out together.

Know What You Want – Alone for the Holidays

Knowing what you want will help you navigate this season of your life.

If someone finds out you are spending the holidays alone and invites you over, do you want to accept the invitation?

Personally, the FOMO of being home while being out is sometimes too great.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to keep to your plans.

You aren’t broken for wanting to spend the holidays alone.

At least I don’t think you are.

Make a Month of Plans

I think this is a great way to celebrate a holiday by yourself.

If you can find an events social calendar, schedule in dates with friends or your SO, and by the time the holiday rolls around, you have fully done all the holiday things, with the day of the actual holiday to yourself.

Also, bliss.

Be Flexible

Plans can change.

Know your limits.

Maybe you do go to a dinner, but after an hour or two, you decide you want to leave.

You can do that.

Always have an escape plan.

Let the host know that you will drop by for a little bit.

Do what feels right to you and communicate it.

I hope this helps ease you into this perspective change.

Spending holidays alone can indeed be very fun. It can also bring up other feelings.

It’s okay to feel both.

On the other side of it, you’ll realize you’re one tough cookie.

A few weeks ago, we stayed in a beautiful lake house and were able to join in (as a family) the memorial of my late grandfather (God always provides).

My aunt’s best friend from college came to pay her respects, and I wanted a drink that would ring in warmer weather.

A drink that could rally the beauty in the spring despite the circumstances.

My grandfather wanted a good sending off and who was I to negate that? We must provide the hospitality we were brought up with.

A duty I respect.

I thought to myself — an Aperol Spritz would be the perfect drink.

During a dinner night at one of our family favorite restaurants, I asked if she was keen on the drink Aperol Spritz.

She was not (it was too bitter for her taste) — so I was on the hunt to find something I could share with her the next time we were all together.

This is a weird habit, but if you have ever worked in the service industry — it is a duty, and we guard it with our lives.

I started researching alternatives to the Aperol Spritz and found out that there are two.

Now, I should mention that this could be an appropriation post.

A Bit of a Backstory – The Hugo Spritz

To preface.

I have the utmost respect for Italian culture and tradition.

My late grandmother has a very best friend who is 100% Italian.

They both share similarities (let the annoying Americanisms commence)!

Both had mothers whose parents emigrated from (Ireland (my grandmother) and Italy (her BFF)) and both of their fathers were from (Ireland (my grandmother) and Italy (her best friend)) — They both grew up in Canada (met in middle school and became lifelong friends) — Both of them marrying men from the same small town in the U.S, becoming citizens together, and raising their kids side by side.

Like a truly kismet, amazing, and beautiful friendship.

Her best friend is one of the most amazing, and active people. I can always call her and she is always down for a chat. She’s the best.

When I tell you that you haven’t had real Italian food until a real Italian makes it for you — I would be lying.

I was ten.

My grandma’s best friend was in town for a conference. My grandma was in Reno (so not her style– but I am sure — super fun) — her BFF was staying with us and had made us spaghetti and meatballs, with a side of wine she had made with her son from their garden (her husband had made her the most magnificent garden I have ever seen).

HEAVEN!

I have never had a meal as perfect as that again (and I HATE spaghetti).

Truly, it was perfection.

The spices, the flavor, the care — You won’t find that often.

The Hugo Spritz

This drink reminds me of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame.’

St. Germain did not come to play.

A drink made of elderflower and a spritz of a Hugo (the name) “is just as sweet.”

The Hugo Spritz

Ingredients

• Four ounces of Prosecco

• 1/2 ounce of St. Germain

• Half a wine glass full of ice

• 1 ounce soda water

• Muddled 2 mint leaves

• Garnish with a lime

Directions

• Add mint to wine glass and muddle.
• Next add your ice (about a half full).
• Add in your four ounces of Prosecco
• Add in q/2 ounce of St. Germain
• Add one ounce of club soda

The Aperol Spritz

To make this a truer tasting test, I had some help.

The Aperol came in second with myself and another person.

Here is the recipe for an Aperol Spritz.

(Trade out the St. Germain with Aperol).

3 ounces of Aperol (add for sweetness).

4 Ounces of Prosecco.

Half of a wine glass full of ice.

Top with club soda.

Garnish with lime.

Limoncello Spritz

Follow all the same instructions as before.

Only this time, add in 1/2 ounce to two ounces of Limencello.

Garnish with lemon.

For all spritz drinks, please drink responsibly.

Hosting a fondu party is not everyone’s cup of tea, but if it is yours and you want to show your closest friends and family that you would love to celebrate love with them, here are some ideas on how to get the party started.

Host a Fondu Party – Cookware

I love hosting fondu parties. I threw my first one when I turned 22 and it was a huge hit with everyone (70s costumes required as entry with only vinyl playing…..the best idea IMO).

Fondu parties are such a fun and easy way to entertain your guests, while keeping the mood light and fun.

Admittedly, getting the cheese to stay soft for the entire evening can be a task. So, I recommend using an electric fondu pot.

The fun thing about a fondu party is that you can indeed do two styles of fondu.

One for the main course, one for dessert and or just one style altogether.

If you were looking for a great electric chocolate fondu pot, this one is perfect.

Fondu Party Accessories

If you want the real Swiss fondu experience, may I suggest investing in L’Original Swiss Knight Fondu.

Depending on the group size, it’s always handy to have enough dipping sticks for everyone.

You never know and it is always better to be over prepared than under prepared.

Serving trays are also a great way to present the food to your guests and this ceramic set from Starfrit is simple, chic and elegant enough to entertain your guests.

Fondu Recipe’s to Try

I would never claim to be the person who has the fondu cheese recipe down perfectly, but I will say a fancy cheese, mixed with cheddar and a bit of dry white wine and a touch of flour (most use cornstarch), pepper, spices and garlic does the trick.

The possibilities are endless.

Hosting Tips

Fondu parties are a group effort. I used to feel that as the host I had to provide everything but that is simply not true.

As a host, you can provide the space and a few party essentials.

However, I find it a lot more enjoyable if it’s a group effort.

As in, guests contribute something to dip and bring their own beverage of choice.

While you also provide options for beverages, it’s just a lot more affordable that way and a lot less stressful.

With a birthday party situation, I think I tried to provide the entire party experience, but with mid-year gatherings where it’s not someone’s birthday, it’s best to split the responsibility and most people enjoy that.

Other things to consider.

Making a dress code for the party is also really fun.

Setting up a theme is one of my favorite ways to do parties.

Maybe have it be an all-girls night fondu and pajama party with a party signature cocktail, mocktail or wine.

Whatever you decide to do, get creative. It makes it way more exciting.

Holiday Board Games

Holiday board games are a staple in our family.

They have always been something that has entertained us as a family over the Christmas holidays for years.

It was pretty normal to get a fun new family game (and still is) that we would take up to spend Boxing Day through the end of December with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Even thinking about board games and what they mean on my mom’s side respectively, I think it’s more so my maternal grandmother’s side of the family that embraces a good board game and puzzles.

I myself am not a fan of puzzles.

But I love a good game, but not a hard game.

I like the games where you don’t really have to think too much and where there is limited math involved, and you can play multiple rounds.

My favorites are the games where it’s engaging enough that hours can go by, and you’re still loving the game.

Monopoly is not one of those games and therefore is not on my list of fun holiday board games.

Monopoly never ends and I find many people I’ve asked agree that they also find it a bit boring.

However, I feel that games should be relaxing for brains, and so these games are for chill vibes only.

Games for the Mystery Loving Minded

Our family loves the game Mastermind.

It’s really quite entertaining because you basically have a morse code and the other person tries to guess your code, and whoever guesses wins.

This game goes as quickly or as long as you want.

It’s such a fun game to play and is a favorite in our game night rotations.

Cards Against Humanity

Cards Against Humanity….

This game is not for the faint of heart.

It’s a little crass and a little cruel and the winning cards are subjective to the person who picks the winning card.

You can buy additional cards to play with this game, but I have to say that this game is probably not for everyone and is especially not for children.

If you want their family edition, you are in luck.

Family Friendly Nostalgia – Fun Holiday Board Games

Crocodile Dentist was THE GAME to have in the early 90s and I am happy to report it is still fun to play as an adult.

This game will keep you on your toes, is thoughtless and fun.

I had this game as a child, took it to pre-school and had it stolen, so this was a game I am so happy to see in stores again.

Mancala

Once upon a time I had a neighbor who lived up the street and we played mancala during the summer.

Santa brought me this board game for my stocking one year and I have since taken it out as a coffee table game to have on hand when guests come over.

Mancala is a fun and easy game and is still fun, even as an adult.

I love this mancala board that is made of oak and has a clasp. Perfect for road trips.

Influencers In The Wild

Okay, I have to get my hand on this game.

This somehow gives me Girl Talk vibes and it seems so fun….and cheeky.

Trouble

Trouble was a Christmas Classic board game for us growing up.

I can still hear the pop.

Floral Bouquets-How to Make Them at Home

What I love about a floral bouquet is that they are universally pretty, pretty much everywhere you go.

In the garden, on fabric prints, in paintings and basically…..flowers are a win anywhere and I am a huge floral print fan.

About eight years ago, I got really into making my own floral arrangements.

I remember the year because one of my vases is my late grandmothers and it was a vase that I bought for her for Mother’s Day.

What You’ll Need

-A large store-bought bouquet of flowers

-scissors

-a vase

-water

-bleach

-sugar

-your own unique styling ideas

Picking the Perfect Bouquet

Picking a bouquet is a really fun way to get to know yourself.

I prefer picking out single flowers from Huckelberrys (a local store)….. but when I went in recently the prices went from a few dollars a flower to almost ten dollars for a single flower, so I did what anyone would do…..

Opting instead to buy a fresh and curated bouquet with flowers that resonated with me.

I have to be honest, I only know a few flowers by name.

My favorite flowers of course….. and the basic flowers that everyone knows.

But beyond that, I really just pick up whatever flower feels right at the moment.

Remember that the perfect bouquet has plenty of accent greenery, like eucalyptus or Israeli Ruscas.

Make Sure you Have Bigger Flowers & Smaller Flowers

You want to make sure you have accent flowers to accompany your statement flowers.

Accent flowers on a bouquet can be anything smaller than the statement flowers.

I would recommend trying not to be too rigid and leave yourself with too many rules.

It is your bouquet after all and you’re going to be the one who has to look at it.

Make sure it is something that you will enjoy looking at.

Lay the Flowers out

By laying the flowers out, you’re able to pick up just the right flower and add it to your bouquet by hand.

This gives you a slow and steady approach to adding together your bouquet.

Bundle Up the Floral Bouquet in Your Hand

When you bundle up the floral bouquet, you’re better able to see how the arrangement is coming along.

I like to hold mine up and angle the bouquet out away from me.

This allows me to get a better feel of how the arrangement is coming along.

Pick Your Vases

Your choice of vase is very personal.

Personally, I love textured and white vases.

I think they brighten up your home and add depth and character to any space.

If you’re wanting similar vases to the ones in this blog post, I found some really great ones.

This teardrop patterned vase from Target is really great.

Nordstrom has a similar shaped textured vase as well.

If Farmhouse is more your style, this vase is for you.

Or, this one by Threshold is really fun. I love the shape.

If you want a taller textured vase under $30, this is also a great find.

All I can say is that white and textured vases were a thing in 2013, when I bought the vases pictured and the trend is still going strong.

These are timeless pieces for any home.

Trim your Floral Bouquet

When you have your perfect bundle ready to place into the vase, hold the flowers upright next to the vase to measure how much of the stem you want to cut off.

Cut the stem at a diagonal of a 45-degree angle.

Fill the Vase with Water

You’re going to want to fill the vase up to 3/4ths with water.

To keep the flowers longer add in a bit of bleach and white sugar.

I always guesstimate this part, so it’s really up to your discernment.

About half or less of a capful of bleach and a pinch of sugar should do the trick.

Check back for the next few days to see how the flowers are handling it (the bleach and sugar) and if it’s too strong, throw out the old water and put in fresh water and the flower food the bouquet comes with.

Patio Music Playlist

A great patio music playlist is essential to opening up one’s patio for the spring and summer months.

Curating the vibe to sit in your garden or patio space on any given day is exactly what a killer playlist can do.

Every year I try to “open” my garden and patio with the right vibe to enjoy the warmer weather.

I enjoy looking around my vinyl collection for certain moody records and collecting other vinyl records I may find at local record shops.

The vibe has to be just right though or else it isn’t as satisfying to me somehow.

Maybe you’re the same?

What You’ll Need

I think as far as record players go, I am not an expert on that topic.

I know a lot of audiophiles get really into the brand and make and model of a great vinyl record player.

Trust me, I get it.

But I think for smaller spaces and a bit of fun, you want transportation that protects the record player and is easily movable.

I think the Crosley is perfect for a simple vinyl lover like myself.

I’ve had my Crosley for probably a decade now and it holds up well.

It’s cute.

It is functional.

It get’s the job done.

What is not to love?

Vintage Vinyl Patio Music Playlist

Vintage vinyl is a funny thing because what I recommend for this playlist is not something everyone will musically enjoy.

But maybe it will get your musical juices flowing so you can pick out vinyl you want to play on your patio this season.

I love Carly Simon and most of my musical tastes were introduced to me as a kid through my parents and my aunt.

Carly Simon was most definitely introduced to me by my aunt.

She had this membership in the early 90’s to this cd company and you’d get like four cd’s a month and so I was constantly obsessed with her cd’s.

Simon And Garfunkle Patio Music Playlist

I feel like these guys made it into a lot of film soundtracks in the 70’s, so I kind of think of them as like true American vintage pop.

Calling all soul and funk lovers.

Listening to a Roberta Flack record is a really unique experience.

You get amazing, smooth vocals, but you’re also getting a fun story at the same time.

Modern Vinyl adds a layer of collecting and savoring the new while respecting the artform of LP’s and the experience they bring to music lovers.

To try to understand why modern musicians love to release LP’s…..

The demand for the audio is there and vinyl spans generations and is to be valued, just as other artists of the past released LP’s.

Have you listened to Golden Hour on vinyl yet?

There is not one person I have met that is not in awe of this record.

Young, old, black, brown or white who isn’t totally smitten with this record.

It’s very beautifully done.

Jon Batiste

Jon Batiste is the Grammy winner for Best Album Of The Year this year (as he said, “everyone who was nominated also made great records” and I agree).

It’s just a good record to listen to fully through.

It reminds me of Janelle Monet mixed with Pharrell, but at the same time….he is his own.

Love it.

There really is no right way to curate your favorite music, just like there is no right way to curate a garden or a home.

Welcome to the Blog

In this blog I want to invite you to embrace your city (or town/community) in a new and magical way and by the time we are finished you won’t even have noticed that we are living in the strangest of times.

Holiday outings can be a very fun thing the entire household can enjoy; introducing some traditions and incorporating the new in a fun way.

Make a fun holiday beverage like; cocoa, cider or tea and dress in your warmest coats and hats.

Why you ask? To venture out to explore the pretty Christmas lights of course.

Want to hang with your friends who live in different households?

Playing Christmas Games

How about a game of some Christmas City Bingo?

Deets on how to play below.

Casually invite your friends and set a time where you can all start playing bingo (socially distanced of course).

Ideally, you would have two people per household playing and one person snaps the photo to a group chat of what the bingo card has on it, and whoever gets city Christmas City Bingo wins.

Christmas City Bingo could literally be;

• Find an inflatable snowman
• Take a photo from the highest point that overlooks your city
• Make a Snow Angel
• Find ten pinecones to make a winter themed shape
• Run up a hill (video record as proof)
• Doorbell ditch (oooofffttt….you did not get that idea from me *wink wink*)

You get the idea. Fill up the bingo board with whatever tickles your fancy (send the same board to your friends or use the one I have made below and take a screen shot)….

Make it as themed or as weird as you would like and throw in prizes if that is your thing.

Take a walk in a park while socially distanced with a few friends, bring a warm beverage and wear masks, exchange gifts in the great outdoors, window shop in the city lights, perhaps sit across from one another on a patio to have socially distanced cocktails…..

But if you do these things please be responsible.

The point here is to get creative, while being responsible when interacting with people not living in you home.

We want to see everyone in 2021 and beyond, and we would like to see them all safe, happy and healthy.

Alone On Thanksgiving?

Holidays tend to be a tricky time for most people. Festivities and articles about their touch and go nature circulate every year and phrases like “Friendsgiving” have caught on like wildfire in the age of the millennial gaze, and why shouldn’t it? It is a brilliant idea.

Options are few on how to spend the holidays with this years pandemic, but we are getting creative.

We’ve had to seriously sit ourselves and our loved ones down and have had to have some tough conversations about canceling our normal festivities for something new.

The general rule of thumb has been to keep celebrating, but celebrate with the people who already live in your home. If you do travel, quarantine 14 days before arriving to your guests home, which gives you just enough time to help set the table and prepare a festive dish for your holiday hosts.

The pandemic has ruined many things, but one thing it cannot ruin is our spirit and our zest for celebrating holidays in new and innovative ways; which is why I want to talk to you about fun ways you can spend your Thanksgiving, by yourself (solo) or with your immediate household, without feeling like you’ve got FOMO (fear of missing out).

How To Spend it

Alone on Thanksgiving Idea 1:

Plan your holiday meal in any way you choose. Maybe you’ve had your eye on a recipe for years and in the name of tradition and not hurting anyone’s feelings you’ve never tried out your recipe. Well, this is your year. Cook away to your hearts content.

I see so many people complain about the idea of cooking for one to two people and viewing holidays as not worth the effort if the guest list is small……… I have to disagree here. Have you ever had a leftover turkey sandwich with Thanksgiving fillers? Make your feast. You’ll thank me later.

Idea 2:

Get your favorite holiday morning cocktail and lounge your morning away sipping and watching the “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.” They stream it on YouTube, so you literally never have to miss it.

Alone on Thanksgiving Idea 3:

Send your annual holiday texts to friends and family.

Sending texts to loved ones and friends is a nice gesture you can do to show people in your life that you are thinking about them, and it allows them to follow up with you in a more meaningful way.

Idea 4:

Plan a Zoom event with friends and family where you can either catch up with one another face to face, or play a fun interactive game with one another.

Solosgiving Idea 5:

Spend the day cooking to keep yourself preoccupied with the holiday festivities, while playing music and keeping the energy fun and light throughout the day.

Idea 6:

What I am saying is, take care of yourself and let yourself feel that you are indeed a PRIZE and a PRIORITY, because you are.

Take a bath and or do a pamper session to unwind your stresses. It is true that the normal holiday stresses of showing up on time, making a dish, helping out, having a lot of in person interactions may not be stressing you out this year, but the thing about stress is that it always finds a way to be present even when old stressors are out the window.

The Grand Finale to Your Solo Thanksgiving

Unwind the day by curling up with your favorite movie and or a good book.

Thanksgiving is the day I personally start getting into the Christmas spirit, so I will likely be choosing a Christmas movie.
