Fall Closet Clean-Out |Great Tips & Tricks for Staying Organized
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
My favorite holiday weekend to get organized is Labor Day Weekend.
I love it so much.
It’s the perfect mental reset for the new year.
The excitement of just going through my stuff, and making sure that everything has a place.
It’s the best feeling in the world if you ask me.
I wanted to share how I find the balance of what stays and what goes when clearing out my closet and clothing.
Remove Every Summer Item from Your Closet/Drawers
This is a very helpful tip for someone who is a visual person.
When you remove all of your summer items, you can logically sense, remember and verify what you reached for most this past summer.
Once you have everything that is your summer wardrobe attire cleared onto a chair (I don’t like using the floor), you can start to look at each item.
Go Through Summer Items Twice
Once you have sifted through your summer clothing, you’re going to want to pull items that are transitional pieces.
Items you can pair with tights, or undershirts……
That kind of thing.
After that, you’re going to be going through items to donate.
Creating three piles in total.
Create Three Piles of Clothes
The first pile is the bulk of your summer clothing that you will be keeping for next summer (these items will not be added back into your closet for fall).
For the second pile, you’re going to have summer items that will be used in the fall and winter months (these items will be going back into your closet space).
The third pile is strictly for donation, and if it is badly damaged (repurpose if you can into a cleaning cloth, donate to an animal shelter for cleaning, or throw it in the trash as a last resort).
Knowing What to Keep
I used to keep items that I loved, even if they held bad memories.
Now, I get rid of those items.
If an item is in your closet that you love but makes you sad or makes you reflective of a difficult time in your life.
I think you can hold onto the item if you need to, but eventually you may find that you want to get rid of the item in question.
Equally, keep the items that you have great memories in.
It’s all about honesty and balance and logically looking at the space you have available to you.
You know?
Give Yourself a Year to Hold Onto Something
If an item has been in my closet for over a year and I have not worn it.
It needs to go.
I know some people say one or two seasons, but I give myself a year to see if I still want the item in question.
Another thing I clear out are items that I “settled for.”
You know, the perfect item but the one that isn’t the color you love, or just anything that makes you feel like you are settling when you can get the actual item you love and adore.
I also like the year rule because the item in question won’t have an emotional hold over you after one year of not looking at it.
You know?
OR….
You’ll be so excited and throw it into your wardrobe’s rotation for that season (a year from now).
Allow Yourself to Time Capsule Things
I am so glad I did this.
As I have clothes from my teen years, early 20s and childhood that have absolutely come back into fashion.
Do the clothes fit me? No.
But to have the reference of the fabric, the shape, the cut, the fit.
Timeless.
And, I can pass those items down to family members who will appreciate them when I am ready to part with them.
Go Through your Fall/Winter Items
Doing a skim of your closet to look for broken hangers and fall/winter staples is also a must.
Anything that does not resonate can be donated.
Also, try and pair similar items to one designated area of the closet.
It really does make things so much easier.
Add Your Storage units into your Closet Space
After you have your autumnal/winter closet in peak performance….
Start to add back in your summer clothes.
These items were so helpful when organizing my closet space.
Happy fall closet organization.
Let me know if you found these tips and tricks helpful.
