April is here and what better time to revisit great red lipsticks for brown skin.
The last time I did this blog post was back in August of 2021– and I am revisiting because I think it’s time.
Do I still recommend these four lipsticks?
The answer is yes.
Yes, I still do reach for these same four lipsticks.
And I love that they are all at different price points.
Finding a Red Lipstick
Finding a great red lipstick for brown skin is not easy, but it is becoming easier thanks to so many amazing people sharing their own findings about what works for them.
Red lipsticks for brown skin can be intimidating, and I want to help women who look like me find their perfect shade of red.
Knowing Your Undertones
Knowing your undertones is a game changer.
Do you know yours?
I have neutral undertones.
Super fun when being fitted for foundation and makeup in general.
Anytime I get fitted for makeup the people matching me are always surprised to see what shade works on me.
Me? I am mostly always surprised.
Being a neutral undertone is weird because you can feel like you’re so close when looking for makeup shades, and you can be slightly off as well.
It takes practice.
So, if you’re a brown women with neutral undertones, these shades will look great on you.
How to Find Your Undertones
Look at your veins.
Green-colored veins equate to a warmer undertone.
If they appear blue or purple — you likely veer into the cooler undertone range.
Blue/green veins are for the neutral-looking undertones.
Some people say neutral isn’t a real undertone. That one is either warm, or cool…..I respectfully disagree.
One can be neutral. Go and color match five neutrals naming them indefinatley to either warm or cool.
I will wait.
Petal Bouche – Amour Fou
Petal Bouche Amour Fou is a great lipstick by Violette_FR.
This lipstick is my absolute favorite shade of red.
The price point is great.
It stays on for hours but can be messy to apply.
So, if you do wear this lipstick, please do blot and powder.
This lip color has been a harder one for me to apply because the color is so rich and packs a punch instantly.
I still have a lot to learn when applying Amour Fou.
She recommends “starting at the cupids bow and drawing an x shape, then slowly filling in the lips.”
I cannot wait until I get this one down because it really is a great lipstick to have on hand.
Spicy by NYX Cosmetics
This is a very velvety matte lipstick.
I love how affordable it is and how it stays on for hours.
On trips, it’s good to have an arsenal of great drugstore products if you forget your more expensive ones at home. Also, lost luggage happens and so knowing your drugstore shades will save you time and money in a pinch.
The other reason is that if you’re not really a red lipstick person, but you want to try it out, you shouldn’t be spending top dollar for experimental makeup moments.
Red Carpet Red by Charlotte Tilbury
This shade is my most expensive shade for red lipsticks.
I like how it stays on for hours, but I think the formula itself is overhyped at times.
I could be wrong.
This one shows up a little orangier on me due to it being a cool red against my neutral undertones.
This shade tends to look good on most everyone.
I reach for it a lot, so maybe it isn’t overhyped.
It feels rich and creamy goes on matte, but it also leaves no stains and wears for hours.
Once this lipstick is on, it stays on.
The Best by NYX Cosmetics
The Best is a great red lip that really hydrates your skin and lips and is easy to wear — staying on for hours.
This lipstick is also at another great price point.
NYX has some similar liquid lipstick shades to Amour Fou, so those could be interesting to compare.
What are your favorite lipstick shades?
