Why do I Juice?
Juicing is something that I love to partake in every once in a blue moon. It’s not something I have ever really kept up with for my daily lifestyle, but when I do get around to drinking a fresh pressed juice I feel squeaky healthy clean, and it makes me feel like my insides are shining and my mood radiates into a beam of happiness; so I really have to ask myself, why don’t I drink fresh pressed juices more often?
I liked to tell myself that juicing was just not that affordable (which I proved to myself was a lie) and that it takes a lot of time to get your fresh pressed juice made (which is not a lie)……..Regardless of my internal struggle to make the juicing experience exactly that, an experience, I gave myself a juicing challenge.
Listening to My Body
Why would one give themselves a juicing challenge? Sometimes we wake up and we literally crave certain foods, or in this case, juices…… and sometimes (and oftentimes) that is our bodies way of saying, “hey, pay attention to the vitamins, minerals and other goodies I am seriously lacking right now and make me a JUICE.”
So, after my body gave me many clues and a craving for the cool juice of a cucumber, I added juicing supplies to my Instacart order (because self care) and coincidentally, I hacked a juicing recipe I adore from a local café and I could barely tell the difference; even though our recipes were vastly different (basing on their ingredients on their website).
Making Juicing Part of your Budget
Unless you live in New York, LA or some other big city, the ingredients to some of your juicing recipe’s can be somewhat hard to track down; my best and biggest suggestion to making your juicing experience at home easy and affordable, is to keep the ingredients list simple.
What you’ll need:
- A Juicer
I have had the same juicer for almost 7 years and it’s probably one of the most affordable juicers, while still adding power, functionality while also taking up minimal counter space, which is something else that I love about this juicer (linking my juicer below).
- Next, you’ll need juicing ingredients.
What are easy juicing ingredients to find?
- Carrots
- Kale
- Spinach
- Wheatgrass
- Ginger
- Apples
- Oranges
- Beets
You get the idea.
Other juicing ingredients you may find harder to track down?
- Spirinella and many other ingredients that sound fancy and far off in Whole Food’s land (we don’t have a Whole Foods where I live) (some of these ingredients you can buy in powder form or capsule form to add to your diet, but if you just want to get in some fresh fruits and vegetables; simple juicing ingredients are best.
The juice I will be hacking is from Huckleberries Café and the juice I will be making tastes a lot like their juice “the Mermaid,” but does not have their exact ingredients list.

The Kale Sailor Recipe
This at home version only requires the simple basics.
Prep time & juice time (about 7-10 minutes)
This recipe gives about 14 ounces of fresh pressed juice.
Want more veggies and less fruit?: Stick to one fruit and one large carrot, while maybe adding in more juice volume veggies like celery or cucumber).
The Kale Sailor (sticking to the OG’s recipe name theme out of respect)
- One small to medium sized apple
- Two large carrot sticks (about 8 mini carrots)
- Half of a cucumber (about a cup of cucumber chopped)
- Two bunches of kale (about a cup of kale; stems and all)
- Two celery sticks
- A bit of ginger root ( I think this is just a fun added kicker, but usually it’s about a tablespoon of ginger that I add into the recipe).
- One cutie orange or a half of a large orange
This juice tastes almost identical to the “Mermaid” juice and I save on driving time, waiting time and I can make multiple juices throughout the week. A win.
Downside to juicing at home? I would say the clean-up is kind of timely and annoying, but in theory, it’s not that bad and the mess is totally worth it.
