Holiday Shopping to Support Black Owned Businesses

Supporting Black Owned Businesses| Gift Guide
Just checking in with all of Santa’s little helpers to make sure you are ready to shower your local and black owned businesses with some love this holiday season.
Tis’ the season to gift and to help with that I have put together a small holiday gift guide, black owned businesses edition.
This year has proven to be a tough year for all businesses, big and small.
Many communities are asking for many to give back to their communities by purchasing small.
Funneling sales that would otherwise be given to corporations, back into small businesses.
Gift guides are always an interesting read for helping us along the gift giving season.
Gift giving can be daunting because some people can be hard to buy for.
Or they can be so easy to buy for, that you forget to revamp how you give gifts to your loved ones and friends in general.
Sometimes it’s nice to throw in a new gift idea into the mix.
That is why I want to introduce you to five black owned businesses I came across this year, that are ready to help you give your gift giving tendencies a new perspective……
Before I get to the gifts, I would like to offer a sobering fact check.
Black owned businesses are suffering and according to CBS, 40% of black owned businesses may not survive the pandemic.
Not to mention that within the racial disparity within the economic divide.
One has to note that white businesses are represented at 11.6% when compared to black owned businesses.
This stands in comparison to 3.8%, as noted in a Yale University economic study.
Black Owned Businesses| Gift Guides
Now, to get down to the gift ideas…..which is why I suppose you are reading this post in the first place.
Coffee Lovers
For the coffee lover, may I direct you to the fantastic beans of Grind House Coffee & Tea Co. This is a family inspired business and the shop has coffee, tea, flavored coffee, cbd & hemp infused teas, coffee mugs and much more …..they even do wholesale.
I was lucky enough to order their flavored coffee in ‘Apple Pie’ and it did not disappoint.
This was the first time I gave flavored coffee beans a try, other than the traditional French Vanilla roast (you can buy from your local store)…..
These are great options if you enjoy dark coffee and don’t really do creamer, but still want to experience fun and seasonal coffee flavors.
They have a lot on their menu and I won’t spoil the surprise.
Honey
Next on the list is for your baking enthusiast and or your sweetest family member.
You’ve probably already heard of this family run business and if you have not already heard of them I would be very surprised.
All things Zach & Zoe Raw Honey are to be known……they were even mentioned in ‘Oprah’s favorite things’ list for 2020. If that isn’t a huge indicator of how amazing their products are, I honestly don’t know what is.
I bought their ‘Raw Honey-Wildfower’ back in June or July and it is now November. It has not hardened at all (as is par for the course with honey) and well….I am on my hunt for my next order of this amazing product.
Fashion Lovers
Did someone say fashion?
Fashion lovers who love one-of-a-kind pieces that are also luxury, please check out Brother Vellies.
Brother Vellies is a luxury fashion brand that offers vendors the chance to stay in their authenticity and honors African craftsmanship at the source.
Buying from Brother Vellies is an act of love.
When vendors partner with Brother Vellies, they are paid what they are owed while being in partnership with a westernized black owned business.
Brother Vellies founder Aurora James also started the 15% pledge.
A movement and online space, which asks corporate westernized businesses like; Sephora, Target and many others to offer 15% of their shelving space to black owned businesses.
This is such a great idea, and I am glad she thought of it and is bringing it to the fore.
The Art Collector
Perhaps the person on your shopping list is more of a history buff, but is also into photography with a side of woke?
I have you covered.
May I introduce you to the photographic musings of Marcus Ingram?
Marcus showcased some monumentally moving moments back in June 2020, and his photographic vision should not be ignored.
You can order prints directly off of his website.
A Gift for the Skincare Fanatic
The final and last black owned business I want to cover this holiday season is for your skincare lover and the introduction to Dehiya beauty, which is all about sustainability in skincare.
Item’s are ethically sourced and are as natural in ingredients as they come.
What I love about this shop is that they have already imagined gift giving in that they offer gift cards.
So the idea that someone you love can peruse the shop and find what works best for their skin is a really neat idea.
Plus, in the process you are supporting a black owned business and that is a job well done on both the gift giver and the gift recipient.
These shops and businesses are creative touchstones in the fabric of what America is all about.
I hope that you found this post helpful and perhaps you’ve even found someone you love an amazing one-of-a-kind gift.
Thus concludes my black owned business; holiday gift guide for 2020.
I hope you enjoy this post and do let me know if you end up supporting any of these black owned business and what you think of the shops mentioned.
xx
