Styling a plaid midi skirt for spring – Ironically, I bought this plaid skirt in mid-late February.
I thought it would be perfect for next winter and Christmastime, especially since I got rid of most of my plaid dresses from a few years ago.
I love how things just pop out at you when you’re shopping. You can find some real gems.
However, I will say that because of the plaid and this time of year, I have found this piece a little harder to style.
Challenged accepted.
In college, I used to make myself buy tricky items of clothing and I would have style challenges to see if I could make the outfit work.
It was a fun game, and I think it’s stuck with me as I have grown in age.
It was and is the equivalent of adult dress-up.
Styled Tip #1
Look for neutral colors and or neutral patterns. I would say the skirt itself leans more on the cool side, so stark white adds a bit of contrast to the red and plaid detail. The skirt does also have a bit of a white thread that runs through the plaid pattern as well.
Style Tip #2
To balance out the stark white against the red plaid I added a scarf to bring in more of that red and cool toned color palette.
Style Tip #3
Opt for shoes that bring balance to your body within the shape and volume of the pieces surrounding the base of the outfit, while also complimenting and honoring the shape of your body.
For this look, I opted for black flats.
Style Tip #4 – How to Style a Plaid Midi Skirt for Spring
Add something that adds consistency within the volume from top to bottom. So, the skirt is pretty full but also has straighter lines.
To balance that out a bit more, I added a structured blazer on the top. It could have been a black blazer, a green blazer — but I have not reached for this blazer in a second so I wanted to give it some wear time.
Cardigans work well, but as it is spring, I wanted more of a jacket feel and the blazer seemed like a perfect choice.
How I Would Style in the Warmer Months
I really love how versatile this skirt actually is. You can dress it up and down. For summer,, I think a graphic tee would be really fun, as well as a fun bag and some necklaces, some jelly sandals, or just mesh flats would be such a great addition to this fun piece.
