The Quiet Luxury Trend & Why is Everyone Talking about it?
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
The quiet luxury trend that everyone is talking about.
What it is.
Why is it happening?
What does it mean for you?
I am so glad we can talk about it.
It is LAYERED baby.
Like a yummy five-layer dip with all the sauce looking like a mild and creamy bar of chocolate….but under those layers?
Let’s take a closer look.
Life Imitating Art – Quiet Luxury Trend Part 1
The trend started due to a lovely show named Succession, a Burberry handbag, and a main character named Shiv Roy.
Listen. I have not watched Succession.
But I researched enough to see where people are coming from. Let’s discuss.
An episode of the show had one character who came from money calling a Burberry printed handbag “obnoxious,” but in like the way of a much better vocabulary than I can boast myself, and middle America went BANANA’S.
Many wanted to know if monogrammed and logo items boasted anything other than wealth.
My take….
WHO CARES.
The masses take — different, and that is okay.
The Pandemic & Athleisure
If you remember those pajama outfits that were a vibe and are still a vibe came onto the scene. Sleeper the brand had everyone in a chokehold.
Sleeper dresses morphed into Nap dresses (or maybe the other way around?), and millennials went nuts.
This trend also had matching work-from-home sets. I bought four and wore only one on repeat.
“Hey everyone….”
“Look trendy in scrubs, pajamas….we’re giving the masses what they want…elevated comfort that you can wear to brunch, a park, the mall.”
Americans already boasted a chilled back layer of fashion for their everyday life.
This style had you pairing a blazer with biker shorts, a baseball cap, and some puffy mid-length socks. Off-duty Princess Diana was the main focus of this trend.
Night Luxe – 2022 Summer Fashion Loud Luxury Trend
In 2020 it was all about lavish, Tumblr, moody lit photos, sequins, feathers, black and silver clothing, champaign, caviar and loud luxury experiences.
Chalk it up to the younger generation graduating during a pandemic.
They wanted to party.
Millennials had been there and done that, so we got it — but it was never as loud as the Gen Z trend.
Drinking culture was also slowing during this time.
I think millennials as a whole sat this one out, and just stayed happy in the moment — deciding on whether or not to reinvest in the wide leg jeans we wore in middle school.
It was a confusing time for most over 30s, and some started to reimagine life with/without alcohol. I was one of them.
Grand Millennial Meets Coastal Grandma – Quiet Luxe
The word on the street is that Grand Millennials have skipped middle age and have gone full retirement grandma and grandpa.
Enjoying the slower life.
This is reflected in coastal grandma clothing.
Think bag lady meets linen sets.
For American’s, it really is a reflection of the fact that anyone born in the late 1980s to mid-90s is TIRED.
Extracurriculars, standardized tests, college, career, and not a whole lot to show for it.
Work hard and you’ll still be worse off than your parents. But also, society will shame you and blame you for it as well.
No, please tell me how our country’s mismanagement and dinosaur-aged leadership isn’t to blame.
Politics — an actual war on race and the dying middle class and cruelty towards the mentally ill and homeless.
Throw in the rewriting of race and American history so that the next generation is clueless as to how we got here, and you have EXHAUSTED the last kids of the 1900s.
You can have your money. Just give us peace.
Money is a man-made construct, and peace is worth more than gold.
Leave us to our linens and our mocktails/cocktails in peace.
Quiet Luxury Trend
How to look rich without being rich.
Anyone who wants to look put together can.
Look to European fashion, which is a subset of the quiet luxury trend.
Invest in classic pieces, stay away from logos, and live your life in a state of assumed wealth.
Honestly, the real rich buy a basic T-shirt for $300.
The rest of us are buying it on sale, at a department store and it’s lasting us until there is a stain or a hole in it.
The rich are buying from brands only they know about to be a part of an assumed club.
When I say quiet luxury is elitist bullshit…..It truly is.
The way the trend is marketed towards being separate from the stereotypical street style of black Americans, eastern Europeans, and even Instagram influencers…….is even crazier.
So I personally love the quiet luxury trend because a rich persons $300 is lost in the realness that you’re a human just like the rest of us….
Humans will dress well, or we won’t.
But when people spend crazy amounts of money to be “othered,” I cannot wait to see their next move.
Foolishness.
Quiet Luxury Trend – Style Items – AKA European Summer Fashion
After all, is said and done, the TikTok girlies have curated their best “quiet luxury” trend videos.
One may notice that these videos overlap a bit with European summer fashion videos.
Below I have selected a few items I think match both vibes.
At the end of the day — dress how you will feel best and most confident.
