Skincare Routine; Nighttime Edition
Sometimes life can feel like a never ending quest to finding your go-to skincare routine.
Why is it so hard?
Is it because everyone has their own skin that is unique to them? Yes.
Or is it because there are a lot of products on the market and we never know if we have found the perfect product for our faces? Also, yes.
The Importance of Skincare
Skincare is something that I was brought up to be cognizant of.
Both of my parents stressed the importance of hygiene and body care and my mother routinely made a point to take time out for professional facials and invested in really high quality skincare; she also had me in my own skincare routine as I entered middle school, maybe even a bit before (because I was all up in her skincare and her stuff was not cheap).
I have to admit I did not start actively doing any anti-aging maintenance until my thirties because I was kind of freaked out by all the information out there………
Really dumb of me, but yeah…..worse things have happened in the world.
As I got older, I did start to notice that my skin was going through different issues that I had never really experienced before.
When skincare stops working, it’s always an onto the next type of vibe for me.
My Skincare Journey
As someone who has combination oily skin; my mom started me on the Mary Kay “Velocity” line when I was a pre-teen to help with pre-teen skin issues.
I used Velocity until I was about twenty-two and finally at twenty-two or so, started to see that it was no longer working as well for my skin.
After I ditched Velocity, I started using Mary Kay’s Time-Wise line.
Mary Kay was always just something I used because we have a family friend who sells it and I never had any issues with my skin, except the occasional blemish and breakout (which I understand is very lucky and I admit my skincare privilege as this can be a sore subject for other people).
So, of course, as I got older I dabbled with other skincare lines, especially when my skin had a new layer of problems and I wanted to branch out to find what I liked on my own.
I tried Clinique…….it was not my favorite, although I really did love their moisturizer.
I also tried Meaningful Beauty for a time, which I liked and am glad I tried.
From there, I graduated to tea tree cleansers thinking that would get rid of any issues I would ever have with my skin, which is pretty much where I left off on the last skin care routine I posted.
I will link that post below…….
But, since my last blog post (about skin care) I have actually taken a few things out and added a few new things into my skincare routine……..
Which means for the sake of honesty and transparency……I need to update the blog with the current routine I am actually using.
The issue with my previous skincare routine; was that for the first time in my life, I was noticing enlarged pores when I put on my makeup, so I knew I was needing to fix something.
My rational brain thought that my last skincare routine was really amazing because it had all parts drying and moisture; what I found, was that I needed to add more moisture, especially because I am getting older.
Updated Skincare Products
So, after watching many Dr. Vanita Rattan videos about her picks on skincare; I decided that I would be going the drugstore route entirely with my cleanser, moisturizer and toner after she spoke about CeraVe and Cetaphil.
I will link the video she posted here so you can view it for yourself.
Switching my previous tea tree cleanser out for Cetaphil was weirdly satisfying.
Cetaphil smells amazing and calming; kind of like baby wash and it’s a perfect go-to for most, if not all skin types.
Next, I use the same Micellar water that I was using in my last skin care routine.
This time I added moisturizer into the mix for my nighttime routine.
I’m kind of embarrassed to say that I skipped this step in the last blog post, but the more you know…….
Side note: This is an all over body lotion, but my face loves this stuff.
Normally I can get dry patches, especially in the colder months…..and this stuff is amazing.
Erasing Some Products From My Skincare Routine
A step you will see that I completely have avoided for about five or so months is the Witch Hazel toner.
What I learned is that Witch Hazel can damage the barrier function of your skin over time because of its properties and can be pretty unstable on your skin…
So now I avoid this step and this product completely.
Here is an article by skincare company Paula’s Choice that explains it in greater detail.
Nighttime Serums
The first step in serum application is the same as my last skincare blogpost.
I still alternate one night on and one night off between Farmacy’s Honeymoon Glow and a Pixi’s retinol serum.
And I should say that with all products from my cleanser to serums…..I apply each product to my face and to my neck and chest…….. and I try to remember to always apply in an upward facing motion.
Pixi Overnight Retinol Oil is something I get at Target and so, sadly I do not have an amazon link.
This product is not on amazon, but here is a link to Target.
After this step, I like to add a collagen booster, which I started using last month and I love it.
It’s from The INKEY List.
It’s a really affordable option and a really great product to add into your skincare routine………
What I love about this product, is that you can throw it on during your routine at any step and it will work, per the bottles directions.
I suggest buying it directly from THE INKEY List as the cost is a bit cheaper.
Next, I throw on a vitamin C serum.
I currently am using the one from Elf (same as last time).
During this step, I kind of let my skin settle and go into the eye area with two products…..
Per my last blog post about eye serums; I tend to not really use them because my eyes water with most serums………
However, I have found two products that do not irritate my eyes and I use them one on-top of the other……
I apply the Olay eye cream first onto my eye area; including my eye lids and the temple area.
After I apply Olay, I go in with this Azure anti-aging serum.
For this serum, I basically do the same thing as with the Olay eye cream, but I actually take this up to above my eyebrows (not in my eyebrows…above them).
Finally, I like to encapsulate my entire face with the golden seal of Vitamin E approval.
Easy and affordable from Trader Joes (same as last time).
Well, that is it for my updated nighttime skincare routine and it’s all under $200, which I must say…..I am proud of.
Let me know if you found any of these product recommendations helpful.
As always, I have to remind you that I am not a doctor or a dermatologist and these are just items that I found that work for me and my skin.
If you do have actual dermatologist related inquiries, please seek the appropriate medical professional.
Talk to you soon.
