Winter Fashion Staples
Winter is now about to exit….. come late March and I cannot tell you how much I’ve actually enjoyed winter this year.
I think this is the year I finally got back in touch with my old ways of doing things, and felt the mental ease of what it meant in years past to hunker down and embrace the season.
Everything about winter is beautiful.
It does not matter where you are, the frost, the fresh blankets of snow….it silences even the most anxious parts of us when we just let it do its thing and sit still, or let it envelop us in its cold.
Late winter is also the best time to stock up on winter garments you want for next year.
The later part of the winter season also boasts the best sales…..because stores are getting ready for spring and summer.
With that, I have decided to do a winter fashion staples post.
I will include images and links all at different price points.
Winter Fasion Staples-My Haul Strategy
My strategy for what I share on the blog is a bit of how I actually like to shop in real life (IRL).
I do not like to feel overwhelmed with options because I can actually mentally check out.
When I go shopping I tend to know what I am looking for, or I browse, but I never spend more than let’s say an hour at most in a shop.
Shopping online, that’s a different story……
But in person, I like to really get in and get out and maybe do something fun afterward, like grab lunch, a movie or a cocktail……
But also, before I go shopping, it’s out of two things.
Want or necessity.
Want shopping is obviously a lot more fun.
But, as I have gotten older I really do subscribe to the idea of one item in and one item out.
My late grandmother would be so proud…..she was always asking me to get rid of clothes so I could close my dresser drawers properly.
In years past I would hoard things but……this past winter I got rid of a vintage sweater I swore I would never…..just because it no longer felt like it belonged to me and I couldn’t bring myself to wear it anymore, so off it went to a new home.
I don’t know how to explain it…… If I have clothing and the energy feels off I cannot have it in my home anymore. So, my haul strategy is a lot like how I shop.
I narrowed down a few items at a few different price points…..and I like to shop for items as if they will be items that I will wear for years and years to come…..Just like how people in the past used to do.
It’s more sustainable that way.
So, with that…….Let’s get on with this winter fashion staples haul.
Winter Fashion Staples-The Fair Isle Sweater
I have been wanting a fair isle sweater for a hot minute….especially this year.
After seeing one from Rag & Bone, I found the most comfiest fair isle sweater sitting on a Nordstrom’s shelf.
I tried it on and I hate to admit that it is absolutely worth the insane price tag.
Did I buy it?
No, but you can.
And these fair isle prints come in a plethora of colors, sizes and price points.
This one linked in the image below is by La Ligne New York……
However you can find cheaper versions of this print from; Banana Republic, Frank And Oak and Lucky….. at a much cheaper price.
I love the idea of a great fair isle sweater that you can also feel free to add into your winter collection for years to come.
A Classic Puffed Sleeved Look
I have been obsessed with puffed sleeves most of my life, starting in childhood because Anne of Green Gables making such a fuss over the “dress with puffed sleeves,” and I got it then and I get it now.
I love a basic tee with a twist, and Sold Out NYC has just the top for those of us who crave a basic tee but also love a basic with something a bit more.
The next best thing to a basic tee is a sweater with a puffed sleeve and pearl detailing…… and this one from Target does not dissapoint.
I have actually been really impressed with Target because I think in years past department stores and chain stores like Target strove to bring designer looking options, and in the past you could tell they were not at a comparable level…… and I think they’ve actually done a really good job of stepping up their game.
That being said, I do think that you still have to be very picky when shopping for cheaper selections, because things like texture, length and overall quality make a huge difference.
That also being said, you can pay an enormous price for some items and those items can still look cheap…….which is why in both arena’s of shopping…..its the quality that matters and not the price tag.
But, back to this particular sweater……
This particular sweater feels like a dream. It’s warm and soft and feels a lot like I went into Nordstroms and picked up a really expensive piece.
It looks expensive and it feels expensive and no it is not itchy.
Highly recommend.
Oversized Button-Up Sweater
This is a sweater I have been looking at from places like Sezane for over the past year, but If you wait long enough you can find just about anything at a cheaper price point.
I almost don’t feel like this is fair to share, but I actually got this sweater for $4 while vintage and thrift shopping recently and it was basically brand new.
The tag on it said “a new day” and I was like…..I think that’s a target brand or a brand that target at least carries?
Long story short…….you can still buy this from Target.
This one comes really oversized, but I got this in a medium and it’s still oversized to my perfect liking.
For reference I usually go in tops sizing either a medium or a large, but if I want something really baggy I always size up one or two sizes.
A Sweatshirt Dress
I did not know that I would even be into this, but this for me is so comfy cozy and classic.
Imagine throwing this on in the winter with some tights and some boots and a long jacket…..and in the spring pairing it with bare legs and sneakers.
An actual all season dream piece….except maybe not on a hot summer day, but perfect for the cooler ones.
I think a sweatshirt dress is actually kind of hard to make look classy, yet the Nordstroms brand did just that.
They actually have a really great selection of sweatshirt dresses on their site and because this is a clothing item I am actually pretty sure won’t be made at a cheaper level with the level of quality these particular dresses have…… I would venture to say you may have to splurge to have a classy sweater dress……
Except wait…Asos kind of does have a similar dress like the one linked below.
Fuzzy Wuzzy Jackets
I am here for the fuzzy jacket moment.
It feels very 1970s and cozy and that is literally my jam.
If you ask my parents what kind of child I was……I had a very emotional connection to the 1970s.
The music was home.
I only wanted to watch retro television.
My room was dedicated to lava lamps, drip candles, curtain beads, blow up furniture and any clothing that resembled my parents childhood….I wanted to wear or have.
So here are my two picks for fuzzy jackets.
The expensive one is from a brand called A Piece Apart.
The second jacket is a really fun fancy low end dupe by H&M.
I love.
What I love about this jacket is that you can take out the waist belt and just wear it as a bulkier piece.
But I am not going to lie to you, the one from Ted Baker is also STUNNING.
Glamourous Booties
Every year I look forward to the colder months because you get to wear boots and booties and I really think this is one of the best accessories for any outfit.
I love a glammed up shoe that you can just add to your wardrobe that does amp up the look just a little…. and I think I found a great bootie by Kelly and Katie.
But also, the Betsy Johnson Kyla and Cady Rhinestone bootie are truly beauties.
Faux Fur Lined Hiking Boots
I know in last years Essential Clothing (Winter, 2.0) post I raved about my Sperry winter boots and I still love them, but this year I upgraded to hiking boots amid all the ice that was beneath the snow.
Sperry boots are amazing in snow and not so amazing on Ice……So, hiking boots are a thing for me now.
I love them.
L.L. Bean has some really nice boots but an L.L. Bean dupe is worth mentioning.
Drum roll please……..
A brand called Time and Tru has made a dupe and you can find this shoe at Walmart.
Like, how?
It’s a pretty good dupe, right?
I did compare and contrast the L.L Bean image and my own image, but IRL it really does look comparable, especially if you wear them with the top two lace hooks undone.
It just looks right, in my opinion.
Plus, if you are not 100 percent on how you would wear these boots, but like them, try out a cheaper version now and upgrade later. There is no point in spending more money if you are not sure if the boots will wear you, or you will wear them.
Houndstooth Dress
I was really really really smitten with this houndstooth dress that is made by Sandro, but it is almost $500…….
So, I found this other dress that is made by River Island that is purple dog print and still a decent price point, but I wanted to see if I could get a dupe for an even cheaper price point……..
So, I found a pretty good dupe on Amazon that is on par with the original Sandro coloring.
What I love about the dupe version is that you can get creative with adding a bow to your shirts collar and you have more creativity to what shirt you’re wearing underneath.
Thus concludes my winter fashion staples haul.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this post as much as I had making it.
Talk to you soon.
