No Makeup Look
When was the last time you went makeup free?
Not here to throw shade if you do or do not wear makeup…….. but I am here to share something I found to be really fun and cool this past spring and current summer.
As someone who really loves makeup; I started trying to only wear concealer as my base, but I didn’t love it.
I know it’s very trendy to not really wear foundation at the moment, but I have always viewed foundation as an extra barrier to the outside elements to protect my face and so I have pretty much always reached for foundation.
Understanding Your Makeup Dislikes
Personally, I am not a total fan of just the concealer as my base in certain “problem areas” and as my skin got more sun due to the summer months, I started to go makeup free a lot more and I started to ask myself what made me feel most put together and most like myself throughout the day; that would allow me to feel my best, but also not bogged down with a face full of makeup.
The answer may surprise you, or it may not.
Learning Your Features
I began to understand what my actual favorite feature was on my face.
I started to ask myself questions about why I did what I did during my makeup routine.
Were my eyebrows better filled in? Or did I like them au natural but plucked to my liking? Not societies standards….my standards.
I found that I actually prefer not filling my eyebrows in…..and also, I lost my eyebrow pencil, so I just went with it.
Knowing Your Favorite Makeup Item
The next thing I asked myself was; what is the one thing that makes me feel the most like myself when I do my makeup?
This seemed like a no brainer…… but I actually wasn’t sure until I bought this cheap matte drugstore lipstick from Milani…….
You see, I love lipstick (from drugstore to CT and the like).
It’s my most favorite item of makeup to use.
Perhaps because both of my grandmothers swore by their lipstick and perhaps because I tend to geek out on lipstick as a result of always watching them put it on.
So, I found my happy medium of understanding that I feel most like myself when I am wearing lipstick and most like myself in a color that is closest to my natural lip color, kind of a pink yet brownish color.
This has significantly cut down my get ready time on days when I do not feel like committing to a face full of makeup…….. and on days where I just want to get to my day to day duties, while also still feeling put together.
Interestingly enough, the many stages of self throughout life is a weird one, I admit.
However, it is not always so easy to silence the noise of how society tells you that you should be put together.
I offer you this.
Unlearn Your Hang-ups
If you deconstructed all the weird hang-ups society is bent on giving us as people, men and women alike, what is one item you would keep every day to put on your face after your skincare routine is finished?
Would you reach for one product or no products?
What’s one hang-up someone gave you about a feature you never thought twice about before they mentioned it?
How does it feel when you let their hang-up about your features go and re-enter the bliss of who you were before they said anything to you about how you looked?
As I get older, and I think for many of us, we really do start to de-clutter our headspace of bullshit hang-ups and it is a very cool space to be in.
So, going forward, can you please tell yourself something about yourself that you like today?
Talk to you later.
