Mother’s Day Gift guide time has officially arrived. This blog post was created in April of 2023 and has been updated for 2025!

There are so many ways to thank the mother figures in your life.

When gift giving, it’s super important to think of the person you’re gifting for.

I try to think of simple things.

What does this person enjoy?

What are their favorite things?

That kind of thing.

For the Gardening Mom

Honestly, in our family we tend to spend time in the garden on Mother’s Day.

In fact, when I got older I would travel to see my grandmother on Mother’s Day and we would spend the weekend together.

On Sunday, I would drive home and give my mom her gifts.

Because my grandmother lived a few hours away, my mom would always send a large and beautiful bouquet of flowers for her via a flower service.

My grandmother loved flowers.

Those were my favorite ways to celebrate the mother figures in my life.

Because my grandmother loved gardening so much, one year I bought her a special mug and stored a plant inside and she loved it.

She then planted the flower later in her garden and used her mug pretty regularly.

To make it even more special I bought myself a matching mug– so we would be in sync with our love of daily tea.

Last year, I did this Ultimate Christmas Gift Guide, and I really loved it.

For me, I find that having one main piece of literature that encompasses the gist of gift giving really helps my brain.

You can get really detailed or really broad.

It is up to you.

This likely won’t be the only gift guide I throw up for the Christmas season, but if it is.

I think I could be absolutely fine with that decission.

Groceries are expensive.

Rent is high.

Let’s stop pretending we inherited our parents economy when they were our age.

No.

No. We. Did. Not.

You work hard, I see you.

I see me.

So, here I am.

Just plugging away at this Christmas gift guide, knowing that many homes are surviving by the skin of their teeth every month.

It’s stressful out here.

A Shopping Tip

Gifts are always optional. I would discuss with your family how you want to exchange gifts this year.

Last year, I bought everyone a very nice present with a specific monetary limit.

What I loved about that was I only had to worry about one gift per person in my immediate family, and it was way less stressful and meaningful.

You know?

Also, shop sales.

Always try and shop sales, and if you can swing it….shop throughout the year.

I would say save.

But baby.

The Best of Trader Joe’s for Fall —

It’s truly one of the best times of the year.

Here are my beauty recommendations for you.

Best of Fall Trader Joe’s for Fall — Honey Hydration

Honey Hydration is a duo set from Trader Joe’s.

I have yet to get my hands on it, but if you are lucky enough — I am glad you were able to try it.

This product is supposed to be a dupe for Farmacy’s Honey Halo.

Honey Halo is about $48 for its 1.7 oz formula and $25 for its smallest version.

Either way, the Trader Joe’s dupe will offer you a day and evening lotion for about $7 together.

Not a terrible way to get your moisture in for the colder months.

(Plus, this could also make a fantastic stocking stuffer as we gear for the colder months.)

This is not a beauty-related item but a necessary purchase ( I kid).

DIY Christmas gifts — One of my favorite things growing up was how much fun we had preparing for Christmas.

My mom is such a creative person, and she used to do the MOST FUN home projects and Christmas traditions with us when we were growing up.

She has a talent for such things and can make any holiday or event so special. I think she must have inherited this gift from my grandmother.

My moms talents are vastly different from my grandmother’s, and my talents vary vastly from my own mother and grandmother.

But we can all agree that there is nothing better than having multiple generations sitting around a kitchen or dining room table, creatively collaborating under one common goal.

Here are some fun DIY gift ideas for you and yours.

DIY Lip Scrub.

I had so much fun making this DIY lip scrub that I shared this on the blog a few years ago.

It truly leaves your lips feeling super soft.

I am modeling this off of my own college care package that my aunt gave me for my first quarter of college almost twenty years ago.

Twenty……..

I think she ordered the decorated paint can through a vendor at an art show or market.

Either way, it was a very thoughtful gift that was full of cute items and some essentials.

What You’ll need….

• One gallon paint can
• Glue Adhesive
• Yarn to Decorate the handle and lid (school colors are a bonus)!
• Multipurpose Scissors
• Scrapbook paper
• Construction Paper
• Cardstock
• Alphabet Stencils
• 3D Stickers
• Goodies to fill your paint can

Decorating Your Paint Can

When you have all of your aesthetic ingredients, you can get focused on the layout of how you would like to decorate the paint can.

Start by tracing the stock paper and construction paper with the wanted stencil.

For example, You could stencil someone’s initials and their college letters.

From there, you can get really creative.

The background of the can can have scrapbook paper as the initial background.

Scrapbook paper tends to have really fun prints, and you can really personalize it with the print that reminds you of the person you are gifting it to.

Next, once you have your basics mapped out and cut out, start gluing.

Finish with tying on string to the paint can lid’s handle.

Filling Your Paint Can

I love this part.

This is where you can get really creative.

Here are some things I think could be really neat to put into the can.

For reference, mine had like twenty dollars or more worth of quarters for laundry. I think I had enough quarters for my entire first year of school.

Calling cards to call long distance. IYKYK (1-800-COLLECT…..).

Today, you could probably just put a burner phone in there or an amazon gift card.

Socks.

A cute game.

A fanny pack for campus errands.

An amazon or coffee gift card.

Silk pillow cases.

A planner.

Get creative.

The dollar store is also a great place to get a deck of playing cards and fun weird fillers like candy or snacks.

I also think it’s important to honestly communicate your needs to your partner.

I saw a Tik Tok back in December where someone said that they hint to their partner what they would like as a gift, and what I have learned in my own life is this.

People are not mind readers.

Valentine’s Day Gift Idea’s – Expectations V.S Reality

Say what you mean and mean what you say (is that Dr. Suess?)…..

Because literally, if you say “don’t get me anything” and your husband doesn’t get you anything, and then you sulk because you thought he would know to get you something…..

I promise you, unless he’s really attuned to how women speak and hint. He probably listened to you and got you nothing (I know…it sucks).

So please, in life, in love, in work and in general just be as direct as you can be with as much tact as you can have and watch your life become way less chaotic.

Example: “Babe, I really don’t want to go out on Valentine’s Day, but I would like for us to have dinner at home and cook together. What do you think? Also, what would you like?”

It at least opens the dialogue for you to state your expectations and to come to some agreement on how you will be celebrating.

If your partner repeatedly screws up what you have asked for…. “Weaponized incompetence.”

Please buy yourself a gift and know that someone out there can treat you how you would like to be treated, and the first person who can do that for you, is you!

Gifting the best stocking stuffers? Is that a promise?

I cannot promise you’ll be impressed with my stocking gift guide selections, but I can say that I will try….I’ll really, really try.

Tik Tok recently had a calm debate on what to gift in stockings, and I really agree that stockings are supposed to be for the practical.

Growing up in my family, my mom always went all-out for Christmas (she still does), and I think finally as a family we are agreeing to not be so over-zealous over the holiday because we are all at the age that if we need anything, we will buy it for ourselves.

Also, who has the room? Honestly. I cannot add much more to my home without seriously clearing out items and I finally feel like my home is at the manageable level of stuff.

Everything has a place, but for Christmas, stocking stuffers are totally fun and a must if that is something you’re into.

I am totally into stockings.

What Goes into Stockings?

Honestly, I have always been of the mindset that stockings are for items, like socks and underwear.

Each family has their own traditions, but I really feel like my mom has stocking stuffers down.

She’s really good at them and I think Christmas cheer is one of her special talents.

Layering in practical items, with an expensive or mid-level gift (but also, if you do not want mid-level, just focus on practical and thoughtful).

The Best Stocking Stuffers- The Too Big Prop

This is a cute base for a stocking stuffer.

The base can be a cute mug with cocoa or coffee, a calendar, a planner, a puzzle, a movie, book or a game.

These stocking stuffer gifts always sit outside of the stocking and are always wrapped (we wrap them, but you don’t have to). I think it makes for a really fun stocking experience.

What Goes Inside the Stocking?

Growing up, we always had one ornament, new socks, new underwear, gift cards, makeup/personal hygiene products.

My brother was really into video games and Pokémon, so stuff like that works great in stockings.

Some years, my mom and my childhood best friend’s late mother would plan concerts for us to go to together, or Playbill shows, so those tickets would sometimes be a stocking stuffer.

As we’ve gotten older, my mom loves to put cute, festive kitchen and mini items in our stockings.

Basically, Christmas themed anything that is practical (think a gingerbread spatula or dishtowels), just things that we can use all year around.

Sometimes a piece of jewelry (not anything obscenely priced) and as kids, sometimes she would leave a hint to the Santa gift in our stockings.

Santa always had different wrapping paper (I’ve never been able to find where Santa buys it) and has different handwriting from anyone in the family.

Santa also left wet footprints in our living room when we were kids and one year I heard his sleigh land on the roof (was I delirious? I don’t know..).

My mom was able to keep this (Santa) jig up until I was ten (a pretty good record for her but embarrassing for me… because I was always team Santa in classroom debates).

If I have kids, I don’t know how I will explain Santa. It’s a huge trust thing (because you have to lie to pull it off), but it is also a lot of fun and exciting for kids, so who knows?

She tops with a clementine orange and some chocolate and a candy cane.

As a fully grown woman, I appreciate how special my mom does the holidays (especially Christmas).

Stocking Stuffer’s for Her

Bumble and Bumble have the best hair heat and UV ray spray hair protectant, and this mini is perfect for a stocking.

Clinique also has a ten dollar Take the Day Away balm as a mini, which is such a great stocking stuffer idea.

A mini pocket bible is always a good gifting idea if this is appropriate to gift a family member and will not upset them (it’s important to gift people things within their moral code and not force your morals and beliefs onto the gift recipient).

For the lip kit loving girly, this one from Nars is the perfect holiday berry pink.

The Ordinary Caffeine Eye Solution. The best morning under-eye depuffer there is.

Some boot socks to keep her feet warm.

Some local coffee beans. The white coffee from Thomas Hammer is what a lot of locals want when they come home after moving away from where I grew up, so while this is not the original white coffee–French Roast girlies will understand this recommendation.

Every woman wants sexy comfy underwear, and this pack of underwear is perfect.

A great book. This one Memphis looks promising.

Stocking Stuffers for Him

Crew socks are great, and these are versatile enough that they can be worn in casual and dressy situations.

Boxers are a practical stocking stuffer.

A spa gift set for men is a great gift/stocking stuffer that would be outside of the stocking.

These ceramic mugs are perfect stocking stuffers for both mom and dad’s alike.

Keep the men in your life organized with this vintage looking planner.

These hot chocolate bombs would be perfect to gift into each stocking.

How about some windproof winter gloves?

Some Cere Ve moisturizing cream is both a his and her’s selection, but I think men need reminders that skincare is for them as well.

One thing my mom also does well is gifting inspirational and self-help books. Love this one for black men and mental health.

During the pandemic, a lot of people got inspired to buy at-home gym equipment to stay mentally sane and physically active.

I have to say that if you want to splurge on any item for a loved one or for yourself, the Peloton is a great gift option.

If your loved one loves fitness classes with fitness class grade equipment, loves to stay home during the colder months, and has been hinting at wanting one of these bikes…..I cannot recommend it enough.

Don’t forget the Peloton shoes.

I don’t have an answer for that, but I am sure that we can all agree that celebrating the father figures in our lives is important, so let’s get into this blog post, shall we?

The History of Father’s Day

Father’s Day has a special place in my heart……because this holiday was actually started in my hometown, by a women named Sonora Smart Dodd; she was raised by her father and wanted a holiday that represented the multifaceted family unit; so she invented “Father’s Day.”

Father’s Day is now celebrated throughout the world, which is very cool.

Showing that love really can create movements, holidays, celebrations and just about anything really.

So, in honoring the father figures in our lives, let’s take a minute to think about what we can do to let our father’s know how we truly care.

Yes, gifts are always nice, and dad’s I find are not that hard to buy for…….(but also, they are kind of hard to buy for).
